Archaeological site in Cardiff

Caerau Hillfort is a significant archaeological site in the west of Cardiff, Wales. As one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Glamorgan, it covers approximately 5.1 hectares and provides a deep insight into the region's prehistoric past.

Historical significance of hillforts

Historical Overview
The origins of Caerau Hillfort date back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by finds of tools and ceramics. During the Iron Age, the settlement was expanded into a significant village surrounded by multiple ditches and ramparts. These fortifications reflect the strategic importance of the site and the need for protection by the ancient communities.

Iron Age settlements in Wales

In the medieval period, a ringwork castle was built within the hillfort, likely of Norman origin. Additionally, the site includes the ruins of St. Mary's Church, dating back to the 13th century. This church may have been built on top of an even older, possibly pre-conquest church.

Preservation of cultural heritage

Archaeological Significance
Caerau Hillfort is remarkable not only for its size, but also for the variety of artifacts discovered there. Excavations have uncovered remains of residential structures, ceramics, and tools that offer valuable insights into the lives of people during the Iron Age and beyond. These finds significantly contribute to the understanding of prehistoric and medieval settlement in South Wales.

Landscape and Surroundings
The elevated position of the hillfort provides a wide view over the Ely Valley and the surrounding areas. The natural features of the site were skillfully utilized to construct defensive structures that provided both protection and control over the surrounding landscape. Today, the area is surrounded by forests and green spaces that invite hiking and exploration.

Cultural and Social Importance
In recent years, the local community, supported by the CAER Heritage Project, has shown great interest in researching and preserving the hillfort. Numerous projects have been initiated in collaboration with archaeologists and historians to raise awareness of the site's historical significance and to preserve the cultural heritage for future generations.

This is well worth a visit. Plenty of earthworks to see from the iron age hillfort, a ruined church, and a spectacular view over Cardiff. There's an information centre, but it was shut on the Sunday when we went. If you're using Google Maps to get here, use Church Road, Caerau as the location, not Caerau Fort, as GM identifies the dual carriageway as the closest place to stop.

Fascinating hilltop site on the edge of the Cardiff suburb of Ely/Caerau from which the Celtic tribe, the Silures - much-respected opponents of the Romans - ruled SE Wales. Much earlier origins date it back nearly 4000 years BC. Best visited outside winter as there is a possibly muddy climb through woodland to the top, from which its spectacular position commanding surrounding countryside can be seen. An onsite visitor centre offers explanatory panels and also serves as the hub for a range of very worthwhile community projects.

A place of great historical interest for those that are onto or want to get into history at different levels. In summer there are local groups that get together and do a dig of different sections of this ancient hillfort site it dates back a very long time to Neolithic times as I understand it.
